This book, now in 2nd edition, describes management and nutrition that is necessary to keep young dairy calves healthy and promote optimal future productivity.

The focus is on preventing disease, which will also promote optimal performance.

The book is intended for those with an interest in or working with dairy calves.

It is based on a thorough review of all peer-review publications and many publications are referenced. 

Starting with development of the calf in the uterus of the cow, it follows the calf through birth, the neonatal period, weaning until approx. 6 months of age.

The current dairy systems raising the calves apart from the dam is described and the focus is to optimize health of calves in these systems.
Biosecurity is especially important to prevent diseases, and many biosecurity measures are covered throughout the book.

Various disease challenges are briefly described, but this is not a veterinary handbook of calf diseases.

Fundamental therapeutic approaches are discussed for disease conditions.

The aim of the book is to enable the reader to better understand the implications and importance of various nutritional or management recommendations.
